Work plan - work packages, deliverables

NEXT will develop new geomodels and novel sensitive exploration technologies which are fast, cost-effective, environmentally safe and socially accepted.

NEXT project is composed of seven interactive work packages (WPs) where WPs 1, 6 and 7 relate to management, clustering, dissemination and exploitation activities and run throughout the duration of the project. WP2 is focused on developing methodologies and workflows for exploration using a mineral systems approach. WP3 and WP4 are the main technological hard- and software development work packages. Here novel geophysical electromagnetic (EM) measurement devices using two drones will be developed. In addition, surface geochemical techniques and data processing and integration tools will be improved to realize an integrated exploration approach. WP5 is related to social license to operate within mineral exploration context. The schematic diagram above represents the overall structure of the work plan in terms of the constituent work packages and their relationship.

WP1

Coordination

The management strategy of NEXT will be based on clearly defined responsibilities, efficient planning, communication, transparency and progress monitoring throughout the project´s lifetime.

As a whole, the consortium has a strong project management experience and will be able, based on its wide technical experience to be flexible in management and control to deal with possible unforeseeable events.

The overall management objective is to guarantee a smooth day to day running of the project for the entire consortium. Specific objectives include:

  • Sound management of administrative, financial and legal matters
  • Coordination of the scientific & technical activities of the project and efforts of partners
  • Acting as the intermediary for all communications between the partners and the Commission
  • Providing decision making, quality control and conflict resolution mechanisms to support the project’s consortium and its evolution;
  • Promoting gender equality in the project
  • Preparation and submission of all the periodic activity and management reports.
  • Oversee IPR matters and exploitation planning

The management structure will allow decisions to be taken in a structurally coherent manner, while avoiding the potentially biased view of a single co-ordinating institution. The structure makes decisions transparent as it assures information flow bottom-up as well as top-down

WP2

Mineral Systems Modelling

WP2 is oriented to the definition and detailed geological and geochemical knowledge of the mineral systems used as test sites for NEXT and the definition of pathfinders/vectors to ore based on this mineral system approach. The ultimate goal of this work package is to define conceptual and regional guidelines for targeting orebodies, decreasing the costs of exploration and the social stress. This WP is also oriented to provide a geological and infrastructural background of the test sites for WP3 and 4.

WP3

Novel Exploration Technologies

Mineral exploration requires more and more sophisticated methods and processes to improve detection of mineral prospects. Under WP3 there will be developed and integrated several new and innovative systems to fullfill this requirement. Novel geophysical survey systems for data acquisition combined with high-end processed geochemical data and accurate satellite data will provide comprehensive information on the target area. With sophisticated modelling and analysing tool developed in WP3, it is possible to give high quality geological interpretation of soil and bedrock structure and its nature.

WP4

Data Fusion

In WP4, we are excited to develop new, modern and environmentally friendly software and tools for data processing and data integration. Our intention is to bring them to the market by testing and applying them in real live test sites together with industry partners from Europe. Among others, we will develop a multi-scale and multi-sensor approach fusing spectral data from laboratory, field, drone and remote sensing measurements. Secondly, we will come up with a new software technology for more accurate 3D electromagnetic inversion modelling. Moreover, a new open source software tool for geoscientific data integration will be realized with a combination of artificial neural networks and self-organizing maps. Finally, WP4 will evaluate the positive effects of these new software tools and techniques and how exploration costs can be reduced with them.

For many modelling problems, the only way to estimate the validity of the result is to solve the problem with a number of independent techniques. From the point of view of the researcher, this requires the ease of access to suitable software and data, and the ability to compare this plethora of data and modelling results. Improvements in software availability will be made in WP4 by implementing new tools based on well-known methods, equipped with data pre- and post-processing especially suited for spatial data analysis. Beyond the design of new devices, steps forward in exploration technologies will be made by gathering and merging data obtained from already commercially available apparatus.

The detailed objectives of WP4 are:

  • To delineate the hydrothermal alteration zones of the study areas by applying end-member extraction - spectral un-mixing techniques to field, laboratory and remote sensing datasets.
  • To develop a 3D electromagnetic modelling and inversion software for post-processing data
  • To develop tools for data calibration and extraction of various field techniques including a representative spectral library for each technique, and a tool for quick delineation of mineralogy in the field.
  • To implement the self-organising-maps (SOM) algorithm along with data pre- and post-processing for data integration.
  • To create predictive maps of the study areas based on the developed data integration techniques.
  • To assess how spectral data can be used to estimate the costs of ore body discovery, resource definition and transformation into reserves.

WP5

Social License to Explore

Main objective of WP5 is to achieve an understanding of the importance of NEXT sensitive exploration technologies to social licensing in selected localities. Therefore it applies a transdisciplinary research effort which combines social science, practice and stakeholder knowledge. Attitudes to the new sensitive vs. the conventional exploration technology/practices will be explored in two contextually comparable case study locations where different exploration technologies are used, e.g. in Finland (new technology) and Sweden (baseline).

WP6

Clustering

WP6 willbuild scientific and technical synergies between ongoing European and International projects relevant to the scope of NEXT, with the objective to integrate knowledge inputs into the NEXT workplan, while bringing NEXT outputs to the European community throughout the duration of the project. WP6 will help to relate NEXT activities in the Raw materials portfolio ecosystem, regarding different dimensions: (1) the TRLs, (2) the geographic implantation, (3) the exploration/production/ore processing chain, and (4) the EIP Raw Materials pillars.

WP7

Dissemination & Exploitation

The main objectives are to efficiently communicate, disseminate and exploit stakeholder-driven information on the technological and societal benefits of NEXT. In WP7 we will effectively communicate the urgent industry need for exploration cost reduction, preventing long lag times between exploration field campaigns and improving availability of plausible exploration results, and promote the more effective prospecting operations delivered through WP2, WP3 and WP4.
